In Defense of Deep Tones: Why Dark Rooms Foster Intimacy Better Than Bright Ones


For most of the past fifteen years, "good" design meant bright. White walls, maximum daylight, glass everywhere it could structurally go. The sun-drenched open-plan kitchen became shorthand for a life well lived, and paint chip racks filled up with names like Cloud White and Simply White because darker colors read as dated, gloomy, or cheap. 

That consensus is cracking. Designers are painting dining rooms bottle green, snugs deep bordeaux, and bedrooms a plum so dark it reads almost black at night. The instinct behind it is not nostalgia for Victorian parlors. It is a growing suspicion, backed by real research in lighting science and environmental psychology, that a bright, sun-flooded room is good for photographing a house and mediocre for actually living in it, especially the parts of living that involve real conversation. Dark, deep-toned rooms do something bright ones cannot: they lower the emotional volume of a space enough that people inside it start talking like it matters.


Prospect and Refuge: Why Enclosure Reads as Safety

The strongest theoretical anchor for this shift comes from geographer Jay Appleton, who proposed prospect-refuge theory in his 1975 book "The Experience of Landscape." Appleton argued that humans find certain environments instinctively pleasurable because they satisfy two needs at once: prospect, meaning an open view that lets you see danger coming, and refuge, meaning a sense of enclosure that hides and protects you while you look. A cave mouth overlooking a valley is the classic example. A window seat tucked into a dark alcove is its domestic descendant.

 

A dark room with a single warm light source is almost pure refuge. Walls recede into shadow, the boundary of the space becomes indistinct, and the people and objects lit within it become the only clear information available. Appleton's theory suggests this reads as safety at a level below conscious aesthetic judgment, which is part of why a dim, deep-colored room can feel intimate before anyone in it says a word.

 

The theory has real critics. Environmental psychologists have pointed out that prospect-refuge theory, like much evolutionary aesthetics, is difficult to falsify: almost any preference can be explained after the fact as serving either prospect or refuge, which makes it better at generating stories than predictions. Modern humans also live almost nowhere near the savanna conditions on which the theory is built, and centuries of cultural conditioning around color and light may matter more than any inherited instinct. The theory is suggestive, not proof, and design writers who cite it as settled science are overstating it.


The Kruithof Curve and the Physics of Flattering Light

Long before "warm dimmable lighting" became a real estate listing selling point, Dutch physicist Arie Andries Kruithof documented something specific about how humans judge light quality. In 1941, Kruithof plotted the relationship between a light source's color temperature and its brightness, finding that people rate light as pleasant only within a specific combination of the two. Bright light needs to be cool and blue-white to feel comfortable, like daylight at noon. Dim light needs to be warm and amber to feel comfortable, like candlelight or a low lamp. Mismatch the two, dim and blue, or bright and amber, and the light starts to feel wrong, even sickly.

 

This is not folklore. It is measurable lighting science still referenced in architectural lighting design today, even as later researchers have refined and qualified Kruithof's original curve. It explains directly why a dark plum or bordeaux room lit by low, warm lamps feels rich and enveloping rather than gloomy. At the same time, the same deep color under a bright, cool overhead fixture reads as flat and heavy in exactly the way people fear when they say "dark colors make a room feel smaller." The color is not the variable that matters most. The color temperature and level of the light hitting it are.

Incandescent Affect: What Dim Light Does to the Emotional Brain

The clearest experimental evidence for dark rooms and intimacy comes from consumer psychologists Alison Jing Xu and Aparna Labroo, who published a study in the Journal of Consumer Psychology examining how ambient light intensity affects emotional processing. Their research, sometimes referenced under the phrase incandescent effect, found that brighter light intensifies whatever emotional state a person is already in, making both positive and negative feelings, and even sensations like the perceived spiciness of food, feel stronger. Dimmer light does the opposite: it turns the emotional volume down.

 

This has a direct and counterintuitive implication for intimacy. A brightly lit room does not simply feel more "energetic." It amplifies whatever is already happening in it, including tension, self-consciousness, and social friction. A dim room mutes that amplification, which lowers the emotional stakes of a conversation and makes people more willing to say something vulnerable, because a badly received comment will not land with the same intensity it would under bright light. This is the actual mechanism behind something restaurants have known for a century without a citation: nobody proposes marriage or has a difficult conversation under fluorescent light by choice.

The English Snug and the Design Lineage Behind Deep Color

Deep-toned rooms have a real design lineage, not just a current trend cycle. The British "snug," a small, deliberately dim room separate from a house's main reception spaces, has existed in English domestic architecture for centuries as the room where a household actually gathered, as distinct from the formal rooms kept bright and pristine for guests. British paint company Farrow & Ball built much of its identity on exactly this palette, deep, complex, slightly muddied colors like Bancha, Studio Green, and Railings, marketed explicitly around the idea that a dark room at night feels closer and more conversational than a pale one.

 

Designers like Ben Pentreath and Beata Heuman have built recognizable, widely published portfolios around this same instinct: rooms painted a single saturated deep color from skirting board to ceiling, which removes the visual break a lighter trim would create and makes the walls disappear into an enclosure after dark rather than announcing themselves as a decorating choice. The internet-native "dark academia" aesthetic, built around oxblood, forest green, and worn leather, is a downstream, younger-audience version of the same underlying appeal: enclosure read as intellectual seriousness and emotional depth rather than gloom.

Color Psychology's Shaky Science

It is tempting at this point to reach for color psychology and claim plum evokes introspection, olive evokes groundedness, and bordeaux evokes passion. Some of this literature is real. Psychologist Andrew Elliot at the University of Rochester has published peer-reviewed research on how specific colors, particularly red, measurably affect performance and perception in controlled settings, including a well-cited study linking red to reduced performance on cognitive tasks framed as achievement tests.

 

But Elliot's own body of work is careful in a way pop design writing rarely is: his findings are context-dependent, tied to specific situations like competition or attraction rather than universal mood associations, and he has explicitly cautioned against the broad, decontextualized claims that color consultants and design blogs often make. Much of what passes for color psychology in home design content, that blue universally calms and yellow universally energizes, has weak or contradictory experimental support and varies significantly across cultures. The honest position is that deep colors support intimacy mainly through the light-and-enclosure mechanisms above, not because bordeaux carries some fixed emotional signal on its own.


The Case Against the Cave: What Darkness Actually Costs

None of this holds up as a case for living in permanent darkness, and the counter-evidence here is serious rather than aesthetic. Psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal, working at the National Institute of Mental Health, formally described seasonal affective disorder in 1984 after identifying a clear pattern linking reduced daylight exposure to depressive symptoms, a finding since supported by decades of further research and the standard clinical use of bright light therapy as treatment. Daylight exposure is not a design preference. It has measurable effects on mood regulation, and its absence has measurable costs.

 

This is precisely why the WELL Building Standard, the framework increasingly used to certify healthy commercial and residential buildings, includes explicit daylighting and circadian lighting requirements alongside its acoustic comfort criteria. A home built entirely around dim, deep-toned refuge rooms, with no space that delivers strong daylight during the day, is optimizing for evening intimacy at the direct expense of daytime mental health. The two needs are not in conflict if a house has both kinds of rooms. They are in real conflict if a homeowner tries to make every room serve the cave function at once.


Finding the Threshold

The strongest version of this argument is not "make every room dark." It is that most homes over-invest in daylight-optimized brightness across every room, including the ones used almost exclusively at night, and under-invest in rooms built specifically for enclosure. A dining room used mostly after 6 p.m., a den, a primary bedroom: these are reasonable places to apply deep plum, bordeaux, or heavy blue precisely because their daylight hours matter less than their evening hours, and Kruithof's warm-dim relationship can do its work without daytime SAD-related tradeoffs.

 

Kitchens, home offices, and any room where people need daytime alertness are a poor match for the same treatment, whatever a design blog's color story claims. The real, defensible case for deep tones is narrower and more useful than "dark is cozy": enclosure and warm dim light measurably lower emotional amplification and support the kind of unguarded conversation bright rooms tend to flatten, but only in the rooms and hours where daylight was never doing real psychological work to begin with.
