The Sanctuary of Excess: Why Abundance Calms the Overstimulated Mind



In 2014, a team led by Timothy Wilson published a paper in Science with a boring title and a finding that should have ended a hundred design conversations. They put people in a plain room. Took the phone, the book, the pen. Asked them to sit with their own thoughts for somewhere between six and fifteen minutes. They left one option available: a button that delivered a mild electric shock, which every participant had already tested and said they would pay money to avoid. Sixty-seven percent of the men pressed it—twenty-five percent of the women. One man pressed it 190 times.

Now hold that next to the standard promise about how an empty room quiets the mind, and something in the premise starts to smell wrong.

Empty and Calm Are Not the Same Word

We treat visual sparseness as obviously restful, the way we treat water as obviously wet. But it's a claim about the nervous system, and the nervous system keeps failing to cooperate.

The McGill sensory deprivation studies of 1954 paid students to lie in a lit, quiet cubicle wearing translucent goggles and padded cuffs. Almost nobody made it past two or three days. They lost the ability to concentrate, got restless, then started hallucinating. Take away input and the brain doesn't go quiet. It starts manufacturing.

A white empty room is a gentle version of that cubicle. Nothing's wrong in it, and nothing holds attention, so attention turns inward and works with whatever it finds. If you're rested, that's lovely. If you're carrying a bad week, you've just built yourself an interrogation room with good natural light. Georg Simmel described the opposite failure in 1903, writing about the metropolis and the blasé attitude, the protective numbness that sets in when a city throws too much at you for too long.

So we know both ends fail. The interesting ground sits between them, and it isn't a matter of taste. People have measured it.

The Inverted U, and Why Both Camps Misquote It

Daniel Berlyne spent his career on what he called collative variables: novelty, complexity, surprise, ambiguity. His central result, worked out through the sixties and seventies, is that pleasure follows an inverted U. Too little stimulation and we're bored. Too much and we're stressed. The peak sits somewhere around moderate to high complexity, and it moves depending on the person and the day they've had. Both sides of the minimalism argument abuse this. Minimalists assume everyone's peak sits low. Maximalists assume everyone's peak sits high. Berlyne's actual finding is that the peak is personal, and that it slides. Ravi Mehta and colleagues showed the same curve in a different sense in 2012. Moderate ambient noise, around 70 decibels, improved creative performance compared to both quiet rooms at 50 decibels and loud ones at 85.

Not silence. Not din. A room with something going on in it.

Rachel and Stephen Kaplan gave the visual version a structure in 1989, identifying four qualities that predict whether people like an environment: coherence, complexity, legibility, and mystery.

Two of those four are straightforward arguments for density. A room you can absorb at a glance offers no mystery whatsoever. There's nothing behind anything. Their Attention Restoration Theory supplies the mechanism. Directed attention, the effortful kind you burn through answering email, fatigues like a muscle. It recovers through soft fascination, meaning input that holds you without demanding decisions. A fire does it. So does rain, a patterned rug, the grain in a burl cabinet, the slow business of the eye moving across a crowded shelf. A blank wall can't do it. There's nothing there to be softly fascinated by.

Density can restore, then. But it only works if it's doing something specific for the body.

Your Back Against Something

Jay Appleton published prospect-refuge theory in 1975. Humans prefer places that let us see without being seen, a hangover from a very long stretch of being both predator and prey.  Grant Hildebrand later applied it to buildings in The Origins of Architectural Pleasure, showing how Frank Lloyd Wright's best-loved rooms pair a low sheltering ceiling over your head with a long view out.

A deep, layered room is refuge architecture built out of textiles. Heavy curtains. Dark walls that stop the eye at a comfortable distance. A high-backed chair. Books on three sides. The room closes around you, and closing around you is the point.

Oshin Vartanian's 2013 study in PNAS, which scanned people while they looked at hundreds of interiors, found that room geometry moves the brain before conscious taste shows up at all. Curved forms read as more beautiful. Enclosure changed the exit response.

Whatever your opinions are, your body has already filed its own. Dark, layered rooms feel safe for the same reason a hood feels safe. They shrink the field you have to keep watch over. A white gallery room does the opposite. It leaves you exposed on four sides with nothing to put your back against, then calls it serenity.

Tanizaki and the Beauty of Shadow

Junichiro Tanizaki saw the whole argument coming in 1933. In Praise of Shadows is partly a complaint about Western bathrooms, all white tile and hard light, and partly a defense of the Japanese interior, where lacquer only makes sense in dim rooms and gold leaf exists to catch what little light there is. "We find beauty not in the thing itself," he wrote, "but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates."

Beauty as a relationship, not a property. Take away everything that could cast a shadow, and you've removed the raw material.


Architecture Beyond the Eye

Juhani Pallasmaa made the sensory case in The Eyes of the Skin, attacking what he called the ocular bias of modern architecture. Buildings designed to photograph well starve every sense that doesn't have a lens. "Every touching experience of architecture is multi-sensory," he wrote.

Velvet, wool, oak, brass and old plaster give the hand and the ear something to do. Painted plasterboard gives them nothing at all.

Which is a strong case, right up until you walk into a room where abundance has clearly gone wrong.

Where It Breaks

The Saxbe and Repetti cortisol study is the best counter-evidence there is, and it deserves to be read properly rather than waved around.

Yes, women who used clutter language about their homes showed flatter cortisol slopes and lower mood. But look at what triggered the language. It clustered around projects, mess, and things that still needed doing. The stress didn't come from the number of objects. It came from unfinished business. Objects that are settled don't read as clutter. Objects in transit do. A room can hold three hundred things and feel resolved, or thirty and feel like a to-do list.

Individual difference is real too. Elaine Aron's work on sensory processing sensitivity suggests somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of people process environmental input more deeply and hit overload sooner.

For them, and for plenty of autistic and ADHD adults, a dense room isn't a blanket. It's a queue. Any honest defender of abundance has to admit the sanctuary isn't universal, and that the people it doesn't work for aren't philistines. That leaves one rule, and it's narrower than the slogan.


Coherence Does the Work

Rich rooms calm people when the richness is organized, and the organization can come from almost anywhere.

A single tone that reappears in the rug, a book spine, the glaze on a bowl, and the shadow under a chair. A consistent depth of color, so a wildly varied palette still reads as one weight of light. One material running underneath everything like a bass note.

This is why a Victorian drawing room holding four times the objects of a modern living space reads as luxurious rather than frantic. Nothing in it is random, even though everything in it is different.

The minimalist and the maximalist want the same outcome. Both want the room to stop shouting. They disagree about whether silence or a well-voiced chord gets you there. Which raises the question neither side asks enough: Where did the idea that empty equals virtuous actually come from, and who has been profiting from it?
